AMHERST Dwight Jones was looking for ways to get people in this community to make use of its recreational resources. Then Dan Wortmans resume came across his desk.

A way was found.

Jones, program director of community and economic development for the town, has reinitiated an adult tennis lessons program for Amherst after a few years without one.

"Our overall motivation is to increase usage of our two tennis court locations," Jones said on the first day of lessons Tuesday.

Lessons are currently being held at the Cornwall Ave. courts on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Ideally, Jones would like to see the courts on Church St. being used as well. If popularity grows, he said theyll look at expanding lesson times.

Lessons instructor Dan Wortman has been involved with tennis in the Oxford area for a number of years and is also active with the Sackville tennis program and Tennis New Brunswick.

Wortman wants you to get involved in his program.

"Tennis promotes a fun and active lifestyle. Its an enjoyable game that you can play whether youre five years old or 75 years old," Wortman said. "If you want to play a game of basketball or a game of hockey, you probably have to round up eight or nine peoplein tennis you only need one other person. Its easy to find people to play.

Jones hopes the game will grow in popularity as the town plans to arrange fun tournaments throughout the summer

The town is offering tennis lessons to people of all ages. They supply racquets and balls. If youre interested, call the summer program office at 667-6507.
