N.S. horsemen dominate event

CHARLOTTETOWN - The Island Breeders Stake was dominated by Nova Scotia horsemen with Bluenose drivers, trainers, owners and breeders connected with five of the seven divisional winners.

Six divisional crowns were up for grabs at Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre on Tuesday night, but there were seven winners when Southview Sally and Forceful Hope finished in a dead-heat in the $12,500 final for three-year-old pacing fillies.

The Tuesday night race card had originally been scheduled for last Saturday night, but was rescheduled because of tropical storm Noel.

Veteran trainer-driver Phil Pinkney enjoyed a big night, driving Force Ore Finesse to victory in the $12,500-three-year-old pacing colt final and winning the two-year-old pacing filly final in 2:00.4 with Dube Finesse, a Western Paradise half-sister to Force Ore Finesse. Both horses are owned by KPD Standardbreds of Truro and were bred by Donald Porter of Belmont.

Porter had a third breeder credit when Imps Finesse won the $12,500 final for two-year-old pacing colts with a nose victory over Absolom (Pinkney) in 1:59.4. Trainer Bernard McCallum drove the Western Paradise colt for owner Morah Kerr of Truro. Arrow Dynamic, owned by Arlene and Duncan Gillis of Truro was third in this divisison, makingit a 1-2-3 finish for NovaScotia owners.

Clare MacDonald of Antigonish drove both trot division winners, piloting two-year-old Saulsbrook Balance to a six and-one-quarter length victory in 2:05.2 for owner Russell Newman of North Sydney and breeder William MacNeil of Windsor, N. S. Miss Moe, a filly owned by Gary and Connie Ross of Baddeck was second while Demasiado Tequilla, owned by Ivan Jamieson of Wentworth, N. S. was third.

Clare also drove Maple Leaf Opal to a 2:04.1 victory in the $7,500 three-year-old trot final. Ralph Annear of Montague owns and trains the homebred daughter of Nikes Image.

Capping off a big night for Nova Scotia horsemen, Country Estate owned by Wes Patriquin of Debert and trained by Bill Baker of Wentworth finished second to Force Ore Finesse in his 1:57.2 victory while Beer Drinking Drip, owned by Jimmie Rowe of Truro was third.

Beach Party Planned

Truro Raceway will welcome world champion Somebeachsomewhere on its Sunday, Nov.11th program when the two-year-old MachThree colt will be introduced to race fans.

Owned by the Schooner Stables of Truro, Somebeachsomewhere is now back at Truro Raceway prepping for his three-year-old season after wimning all six of his two-year-old starts. The colt set a world record for two-year-olds when he won the million dollar Metro Pace in 1:49.3 at Mohawk Raceway.

Paul MacDonell, who drove the colt in all six of his wins, will be in attendance at Sundays card.

Race fans will receive a photo of the world champion.

Somebeachsomewhere earned $812,000 in his two-year-old season.

His owners have been reported to have turned down a $6-million offer from a leading American breeding farm, who want to stand the horse at stud.
