Amherst Vikings girls punch ticket to provincials

AMHERST – A second-half surge helped propel the Amherst Regional High School Vikings senior girls to the provincial championships.

“Our shots weren’t falling in the first half but shots came up in the second half and started to fall,” said Vikings coach Charlie Chambers after the game.

Down 33-26 at the half to the Glace Bay High School Panthers, the Vikings leapt ahead 55-43 in the third quarter, and went on to win the game 70-55 Saturday afternoon at ARHS.

Lauren Furlong led the Vikings in the qualifier playoff game with 23 points, 17 of which she scored in the second half.

Keira Dyck scored 16 points, all in the second half.

Emma Gould scored 11 points, Ceilidh Bennett six, Olivia Scott five, Sharon McCrossin four, Emma Bickerton and Chloe Stubbert scored two each, and Darcy Gould scored one point.

The win punched the team’s ticket to the provincial championships this coming weekend in Shelburne.

“We don’t have the personnel to rely on one person to score 40 points, so it has to be a team effort at the provincials,” said Chambers. “We will have to stay engaged and focused."

The Vikings senior boys also attend provincials this coming weekend at Kings Edgehill in Windsor after they beat Breton Education Centre 77-71 in a qualifier playoff game.
