AMHERST, N.S – The Amherst Spartans won provincial gold with a 58-44 win over the South Shore Surf at the 2019 Basketball Nova Scotia U18 Girls Division AA provincial championships on April 7.
“It was a great team performance defensively and a well-balanced offensive display,” said coach Thomas Skabar after the game. “We moved the ball well as a team and created opportunities for each other.”
Olivia Scott was a standout performer, averaging 14 points-per-game over four games and earning MVP honours.
“She was active defensively and in transition, often leading the fast break and making solid decisions,” said Skabar.
Lauren Furlong, Keira Dyck and Brianna Warwick were catalysts on defence.
"They constantly made things uncomfortable for the opposition with their intensity and activity levels,” added Skabar. “And rookies Emma Mattinson, Kennedy Hyatt and Lucy Scott brought energy and timely scoring.”
Katy Baker was a sparkplug off the bench and was named to the tournament all-star team.
It was the third provincial championship for Ceilidh Bennett, the teams only senior player.
“She has been a Spartan since Grade 9 and capped off her career with another gold medal,” said Skabar.
