AMHERST, N.S. – The best professional and amateur golfers from throughout the Maritimes will compete at the 2018 Amherst Open on Aug. 22 and 23 at the Amherst Golf Club.
“It’s one of the best stroke play events in the Maritimes,” said Michael Archibald, club professional at the Amherst Golf Club.
The Amherst Open will bring in 120 players, 20 professionals and 100 amateurs, including 40 or 50 members of the Amherst Golf Club.
The defending champions are Craig Taylor, a professional from the Links at Montague near Halifax, and Craig Hollett, an amateur from the Grandview Golf & Country Club near Halifax.
Two prizes will be up for grabs at this year’s Amherst Open; a $50,000 truck from Tantramar Chevrolet/GMC, and $10,000 from Archway Insurance.
“After round one, on Wednesday at about 6:30 p.m., eight players will be drawn and have one shot on hole No. 9. If they make a hole-in-one they will get a $50,000 truck,” said Archibald. “There is also going to be one person picked to make a putt for $10,000 here on the putting green.”
After hole-in-one and putting shots, there will also be a long-drive competition beginning at about 7 p.m.
The long-drive competition is open to players and the public and the winner will receive a Callaway Rouge driver worth $650.
There will be a wing night special at the Amherst Golf Club on Wednesday night. The public is encouraged to come out and watch.
“People can hang out on the deck area and watch. The more people the merrier,” said Archibald.
