Amherst minor basketball adopts Steve Nash youth rules concept

AMHERST - Basketball will be taking a new direction this season for the Amherst Minor Basketball Association.

The AMBA is gearing up for another season with registration continuing at Spring Street Academy tonight.

AMBA, in conjunction with Basketball Nova Scotia, will be utilizing Steve Nash Youth Basketball rules this season, an initiative designd to develop fundamental skills, sportsmanship and love of the game of basketball.

"Through the years, this has been the foundation of the AMBA and we will be working hard to continue in this spirit,'' Paul Cormier, president of AMBA, said.

"Utilizing this program will help enhance grassroots development of players at all lower age levels and help to positively influence children in other aspects of life.''

The program is built on the importance of youth basketball as a vehicle to build character, discipline and self-esteem. Its design will see more participation, education, development and progression of players throughout the year.

Registration will take place tonight from 6 to 7 p.m. at Spring Street Academy for the following divisions and their regular times that will commence Oct. 29 to Easter, 2008:

Primary - Monday 6 to 7 p.m.

Mites - Grades one and two - Tuesday 6 to 7 p.m.

Junior Mini - Grades three and four - Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Mini girls - Grades five and six - Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Fees will include a Steve Nash Nike dri-fit reversible jersey and rubber basketball that will be kept by each player after the season, insurance benefits, Steve Nash youth basketball parent's guide, Canada Basketball Be One membership and a BNS provincial membership.

The vision of the program is to foster the creation of opportunities across Nova Scotia for youth ages five to 13 years.
