AMHERST, N.S. – A new competitive season of gymnastics has started for gymnasts at the Aerials Gymnastics Club in Amherst.

“It’s early in the season but they’re coming along really well,” said Aerials coach Michelle Landry. “They’ve increased their skill levels and some girls are going up a level.”

The competitive team has close to 20 gymnasts, and long-time gymnasts moving up to a new competitive level this season are Kirsten Lawrence and Emma Sjanic.

“Kirsten is moving up to Level 8 and Emma is going up to Level 7.”

They also have many younger gymnasts moving up to a new level, including Alyssa Sealy, Reaghan Arsenault and Marissa LeBlanc.

“And we also have a whole bunch of Level 3’s moving up to Level 4,” said Landry. “And we have four new gymnasts starting at the competitive level this year.”

The competitive team is made up of girls from age eight to 17.

“A lot of them are doing really well on beam and floor, and we have a couple of gymnasts who are strong on bars,” said Landry. “They all have their strong points and weak points, but it’s nice when they can put it all together.”

Coaches Michelle and Ernie Landry both receive much help with coaching from three of their daughters.

“Felicia is coaching almost every night of the week and Sam’s in coaching our pre-competitive team,” said Landry. “And Jessica coaches along with Sam and does a lot of the recreational classes. Jessie and Felicia are judging this year, so it’s nice to see them involved.”

Another daughter, and former Aerials gymnast Kyrsten Landry, is studying at the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI.
