McIsaac named to hall of fame

HANTSPORT - The Nova Scotia Intermediate Baseball Leagues Hall of Fame has grown by four members including a Cumberland County native.

Carl McIsaac, a player with the Maccan McDonalds Royals, was inducted during the leagues championship tournament weekend Sept. 8 and 9.

By all accounts, McIsaac was perhaps the most respected player in the NSIBL.

An extremely talented hitter and pitcher, he was an all-star performer for the Royals, a team that boasted one of the most talented and fearsome lineups in the NSIBL.

Always with a smile on his face after the games - and even during the games - McIssac always finished at the top of the NSIBL in hitting, runs batted in and innings logged on the hill.

Not to mention he is classy, thats the best way to describe Carl McIsaac, Barry Anderson, a Maccan resident and skipper of the Doolys Coors Light Blues, a team that faced McIsaac on numerous occasions over the years.

McIsaac also played with the Amherst Mavericks Intermediate A team in the mid 1990s leading them to within a run of a BNS A title, losing in the finals.

Also inducted were builders Fred Martin and Ray Hupman and player Pat MacIntyre.

They join 2006 inductees Jason MacDougall (player), Roy LeBlanc (player), Dave Pemberton (builder) and Rod LeFort (builder).

Martin skipped the Hantsport Shamrocks to five provincial championships, two Atlantic titles and the first three NSIBL titles before moving on to coach senior ball. Martin was instrumental in building the championship club and motivating his players to work as a team.

Hupman was instrumental in starting the NSIBL and a key organizer for the Weymouth Firebirds. Along with coach Rod LeFort, Hupman helped build a talented Weymouth team that was widely respected by all teams in the NSIBL. Hupman also coached in the Weymouth minor system and helped to build the talented core of players that became the Firebirds.

Pat MacIntyre is one of the best big game pitchers in the NSIBL.

The Port Hawkesbury Bucs' ace logged massive amounts of innings and used his guile and skill to pitch the Cape Breton club to many wins.

MacIntyre helped his team to numerous provincial titles, as well as joining both Hantsport and Pictou County in Atlantic championship play.

In addition, he pitched for several season with the Truro Bearcats of the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League.

The Hall of Fame ceremony was held prior to the championship game, a 2-1 victory by the host Shamrocks over the Pictou County Albions.

McIsaacs induction came in a separate ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 8.
