The Halifax Wanderers made their first signing of 2020, adding midfielder Louis Beland-Goyette on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old from Pointe-Claire, Que., spent last season in the Canadian Premier League with Valour FC and has a reputation as a strong playmaker.
“He had a very good season last year and he is clean on the ball," Wanderers head coach Stephen Hart said in a news release. "He keeps the ball moving and keeps a team in possession but also has the ability to hit creative passes long and short and I thought that was something we needed.”
Prior to making the jump to the CPL for its inaugural campaign, Beland-Goyette was an up-and-comer in the Montreal Impact organization. He first joined the MLS team's academy as a 16-year-old and signed his first pro contract at 18.
After playing for the under-18 and under-20 Impact academy teams, he saw some time with their MLS team and also with FC Montreal in the United Soccer League. He finished his 41-game ULS stint as team captain while also representing Canada at the under-18, under-20 and under-23 levels.
Beland-Goyette appeared in 21 games for Valour in 2019 before entertaining several offers from around the league, then finally settling on the Wanderers.
“A big part of my decision was what I saw last year,” Beland-Goyette said in a news release. "It’s a passionate club with passionate fans and that’s what you want. I hope I can bring success to this club because the fans deserve it, so I hope to bring joy and passion for them.
“The city, the stadium and the fans are wonderful. Halifax is one of the top places you want to play in the league."
The addition of Beland-Goyette brings the Wanderers' 2020 roster up to 12 players.
