It was a defensive standoff in Val-d'Or on Friday.
The host Foreurs and the Halifax Mooseheads kept each other in check for most of the night, at least until Jeremy Michel finally turned the game in overtime. He elected to shoot on a three-on-one with 17 seconds left in the extra period to give the Foreurs a 2-1 win in front of 1,585 fans at the Air Creebec Centre.
After the teams played to a 0-0 stalemate in the first period, Mooseheads captain Bo Groulx opened the scoring 5:43 into the second period. He spun and scored on a backhand from the high slot for his ninth goal of the season.
The Foreurs squared it at 1-1 about eight minutes later when Marshall Lessard pounded a hard shot into the Halifax net.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the Foreurs finally got the break they had been waiting for when two Mooseheads players got knocked over deep in the attacking end. Three Val-d'Or skaters went the other way with only Groulx back on defence, and Michel snapped a low shot home from his off wing to end it.
Cole McLaren continued his strong play with a 28-save performance for Halifax and Jonathan Lemieux stopped 33 shots for Val-d'Or.
It was the third straight game with at least one point for the Mooseheads, who are now 10-10-2-0. They came into the night on a two-game winning streak. The Foreurs go to 12-9-2-0.
The Mooseheads wrap up their three-game road trip against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Saturday. The game will be a rematch of last year's QMJHL final series and Memorial Cup championship game. The Huskies claimed both of those major prizes.
Notes: Cole Foston, Walter Flower and Jared McIsaac did not play for Halifax because of injuries and Gavin Hart was a healthy scratch.
