Three Nova Scotians won medals at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru on Monday.
Halifax’s Ellie Black repeated as the all-around gold medallist in artistic gymnastics and Kayakers Marshall Hughes of Waverley and Jacob Steele of Halifax both won silver on Day two of competition.
Hughes won his silver in the men’s K1 1,000. He finished just behind Agustin Vernice of Argentina.
“Very recently I switched up my strategy,” Hughes said through the Team Canada communications staff. “I have gone from racing in front to kind of catching up. My coach and I have been working on really pacing it out rather than just going for it.
“It took a lot of confidence to believe in it but I did and I raced how I’ve been training in the past few months, so it really paid off. It really paid off believing in my race strategy and I came through with some of my best times I've ever gotten.”
Steele teamed up with Jarret Kenke of Saskatchewan to place second in the men’s K2 1,000. They were just a half second behind the team from Argentina.
Black also won gold at the 2015 Games in Toronto. She completed Monday’s competition with a score of 55.250, putting her ahead of American Riley McCusker by just 0.125.
Black already helped Canada to a silver in the team competition on Sunday and has also qualified for the finals in vault, uneven bars, beam and floor.
