KENNETCOOK, N.S. – It’s been 9 years since Amherst has had a baseball team in the Nova Scotia Intermediate Baseball League.
In Kennetcook on Sunday the Weston Athletics made their return in style, winning both games of their doubleheader against the Truro Bearcats.
Game 1
Adam McAloney, a former member of the Truro Senior Bearcats and Maccan Royals, started things off in Game 1 by throwing a no-hitter.
McAloney was nearly perfect recording 10 strikeouts and the only two Truro Bearcat players to reach base were courtesy of a hit-by-pitch.
The Athletics went on to win the game by a score of 6-0.
A big blast came off the bat of Gus Tupper with the Athletics up 1-0.
Tupper launched a three-run homer in the sixth inning giving McAloney all the run support he needed.
Mats Stone added a two-run homer in the seventh.
Justin Morton doubled and singled for Amherst.
Hitting singles for the Athletics were Andrew Skinner, Nate Stone, Morgan Jobes, and Tupper.
Logan Dowe added an RBI.
Game 2
In the second game, the Athletics got a strong pitching performance from Logan Dowe.
Dowe spun a complete game three-hitter, recording six strikeouts, and leading Amherst to a 3-1 win over the Truro Bearcats.
The only run being unearned.
Mats Stone stayed hot at the plate adding another homerun, this time a solo shot.
Cody Sutton added an RBI single.
Nate Stone had a single and an RBI, while Skinner and McAloney contributed singles.
A key defensive play came in the bottom of the fifth inning when centerfielder Justin Morton took a homerun away from a Bearcat player that would have tied the game.
The game was played in Kennetcook because the Truro field was not quite ready.
Amherst is on the road to take on the league champs in Windsor on Sunday.
The Athletics first home games aren’t until June 30.
The team would like to thank the following sponsors for helping to get the team up and running:
