CAMPBELLTON, N.B. — The Yarmouth Mariners are one win away from winning the MHL’s Canadian Tire Cup league championship.
The Mariners now have a commanding 3-0 series lead, following 3-0 win in Game 3 over the Campbellton Tigers in Campbellton, N.B. on Thursday night in the best-of-seven-game series. The Tigers have dug themselves into a deep hole, needing to win four consecutive games to claim the championship.
Mariners goalie Tyler Caseley made 34 saves in net during the April 18 contest. This was the second shutout of this series for Caseley. Game 1 also ended in a 3-0 win for Yarmouth.
In this Game 3, Brent Broaders (Matt Barron) put the Mariners on the scoreboard at 13:43 in the first period. At 5:37 in the second period Andrew Martell tipped in a hard shot from teammate Noah McMullin who fired the puck in from the blue line.
The Mariners rounded out their scoring in the third period with an empty net goal by Brady Crossley (Noah McMullin). The Tigers had pulled their goalie with 1:38 left in the game for the extra attacker, but it didn’t work out in their favour.
Despite the loss, Tigers goalie Tristan Gray still had a strong night in net, stopping 31 of 33 shots.
Game 4 of this series will be played Friday in Campbellton at 7 p.m. The Mariners will be looking for their second sweep of these playoffs in Game 4. The team swept Truro in the first semifinal round of the playoffs.
If it’s not a sweep, Game 5 will be played in Campbellton on Sunday at 2 p.m.
