Reel us back to 2014. Justin Trudeau promised no more first past the post. It didn't happen.
It was going to happen so that our current situation would not happen. Half a brain would be enough to know It would.
Our country is in peril. Too many feel they are no longer part of the process. It is not should the voting method change, if we are serious about giving citizens a meaningful voice we need to change.
No more playing political games. There are two better methods.
One is proportional representation. This method favours the smaller parties. Everyone who votes gets counted. Then the votes are distributed to each party depending on how many people they ran and the number of votes cast.
In short you are voting for the party.
In the second method the ranking method. You are voting for the person in your riding who wants to represent you. The difference to our present method you need to get 51 per cent of the vote.
In some places this is happening and will continue to happen. In most instances the first ballot will be short. Each person running has declared a second choice. These votes are counted.
If this does not get the original candidate to 51 per cent the person who now has the most votes becomes the leader. And so on until someone has 51 per cent. I will tell you the method I favor in my next column. Stay tuned.
