Roderick “Roddy” Bird

Roderick “Roddy” Bird It is with heavy hearts that the family of Roderick “Roddy” Bird, age 78, of Amherst, announce his passing Sunday, December 17th, in the comfort of his home. Born in Amherst, he was the son of the late Lester and Marie (Nelson) Bird. He is survived by his brothers Lester (Marilyn) of Amherst, and Keith (Ruth) of London, Ont, sisters Joan (Peter) Yaretz of Ontario, Sharon Dickson of London, Ont., Carolyn Bird of London, Ont., Uncle Don, and Aunt Faye. Besides his parents, Roddy was predeceased by sister Janet Cassandro, and nephew Jason Matthews. Roddy proudly served his country for 33 years working in Communications for the Royal Canadian Navy, while travelling the world. A man of many hobbies, Roddy enjoyed racecars, especially Nascar, and travelled many times to the United States to watch the races. He was also an avid bowler with the Experimental Farm league, he loved to skate, swim, watch shows on Broadway, and enjoyed connecting with people all over the world with his ham radio. Cremation has taken place under the care of Campbells Funeral Home, Amherst, (902) 667-9906 a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donation in Roddys memory can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Salvation Army.
