HASTINGS, Mary Helen It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Helen Hastings age 88 of Amherst on Sunday, November 10, 2019 with family by her side at High- Crest, Springhill. Born in Springhill, she was the daughter of the late John and Bridgitta Balga. Mary moved to Amherst after high school in Springhill, to attend Commercial School. Later she worked with her husband Wally at the Imperial Oil Bulk Plant in Amherst. Mary was a member of several organizations, notably the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Amherst Fire Department of which she was President for many years. She was also a member of the ladies barbershop group the “Border Bells”. She made many lasting friends there. Mary loved watching curling. She and her husband Wally travelled to many bonspiels across the country and made many friends. She played bridge for many years and later belonged to a card group with her friends. She was a beautiful cook and a wonderful hostess. Mary loved their cottage at the beach where she spent many summers. She had many friends there, all with ties to Springhill. Her greatest love was her family. She was very proud of them all and especially liked to talk about her grandsons and great granddaughters. Mary will be missed by her son, John; daughter-in-law, Pat; grandchildren, David, Scott (Laura); great-granddaughters, Betty and Alice; sister-in-law, Francis Hastings; nephews, Michael (Beth) Zorychta, Don (Norma) Zorychta, Herb (Wendy) Zorychta, Jerry (Dorothy) Feetham, David (Patricia) Hastings and Jimmy Hastings; nieces, Nancy Feetham and Ruth Hastings, and their families. Mary was predeceased by husband, Wally; sister, Barbara Zorychta; brothers-in-law, Herb Zorychta, Howard Hastings and Gerald (Pink) Feetham; sisters-in-law, Jean Feetham and Mary Hastings; niece, Anne (Hastings) Applebee. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2019 from 6 – 8 p.m. held in Campbell’s Funeral Home Chapel, 98 Church St., Amherst, 902-667-9906. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 15, 2019 at 11 a.m. held in Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Amherst. If so desired, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to the Amherst Fire Fighters Association or to the Cumberland VON.
