AMHERST, N.S. – Amherst Police have recovered a stolen vehicle belonging to an Amherst man injured in a violent assault overnight Sunday.
Const. Tom Wood said police recovered the grey Chevrolet Silverado truck in the Cumberland YMCA parking lot on Tuesday.
Police were called to an East Victoria Street residence early Monday morning after receiving a call about a home invasion in which an 84-year-old man was assaulted.
Wood said the victim said someone had broken into his house overnight and confronted him in his bedroom.
The man, who was able to go to a neighbour’s home for help, was taken to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre where he is being treated for injuries that are not life-threatening. Wood said at this point of the investigation he cannot comment on how the man was assaulted or the extent of his injuries.
Wood said he could not release the identity of the victim, but the home belongs to Walter Wells.
The Amherst Police Department’s major crime section is investigating the incident along with the RCMP Forensic Services.
There are no suspects at this time.

Cumberland North MLA Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin said she was approached by someone wanting to send some Christmas spirit to Wells.
“We are collecting cards with words of encouragement for him and we will be taking them to him on Friday,” Smith-McCrossin said in a Facebook post. “He doesn’t want gifts but we all know that there are times in our lives when our faith in humanity needs to be restored. Such a time has come for this man.”
Smith-McCrossin is collecting cards at her constituency office at 111 Victoria St. in Amherst.
