AMHERST, N.S. — The Bordertown Jam likes to share its wealth.
The weekly jam at Heartz Hall at Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church, and its predecessor Dick’s Jamboree, has poured a lot money into community cause. One cause dear to its members is health care and the annual Highland Fling.
The 37th annual fundraiser in support of the Cumberland Health Care Auxiliary is set for Saturday, May 11 at the Amherst Curling Club while Singing for the Fling will take place on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at Heartz Hall with a number of local performers, including Second Toe, taking to the stage in support of the auxiliary’s goal of raising money of purchasing a computerized training mannequin that’s used by nurses at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
“Health care is something to means a lot to everyone and you never know when you’re going to need it,” Roy Pettigrew of the Bordertown Jam said. “It’s nice to be able to help out, knowing the money that’s raised stays in the community and supports the auxiliary with the purchase of equipment for the hospital.”
More than 20 performers will entertain, including LeRoy and the Boys as well as 11-year-old Alexa Landry and Mark Landry, Pat Davidson, David Huston, Jim Brown and Dean Murphy and Dawn Moore.
There will be numerous door prizes, 50/50 and the sale of homemade cookies.
Only 240 tickets are available, and the event has sold out in the past.
Tickets, which are $10 each, are available at the office at Trinity-St. Stephen’s and First Baptist Church as well as at the Bordertown Jam and the hospice office at the Amherst Centre mall.
“Singing for the Fling has been an important part of the Highland Fling and we’re thrilled to have the Bordertown Jam back again this year,” Ida Roode of the fling committee said. “The Fling is the major fundraiser for the auxiliary.”
Last year, Singing for the Fling raised approximately $3,900.
On Saturday, April 27 it will be Fling Day at Canadian Tire. Drop in between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and spin the fling wheel and be entered into a draw for a three-piece DeWalt air tool kit. There will also be a barbecue.
Saturday, May 4 will be Fling Day at Breakfast at Brittney’s with $2 from every meal over $8 going to support the Fling.
Cumberland Quilters have also donated a full-size quilt. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5 and available from members of Fling committee, auxiliary members and at the Fling itself, when the draw will be held.
