CLARK'S HARBOUR, N.S. – An overnight house fire in Clark’s Harbour has claimed the life of a 60-year-old man, identified by local sources as Leigh Robert Goodwin.
Firefighters were called to the scene on Robie Street just before midnight on Nov. 21. One occupant of the home was able to get out safely.
Valiant efforts were made by firefighters and local residents to try and rescue the man, said RCMP Cpl. Dal Hutchinson.
“Local residents tried very hard to get into the home to try and rescue him, but their efforts were pushed back by the fire,” he said.
According to an RCMP media release, it was after the fire was brought under control that the deceased man was located inside the residence.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. As is standard, the investigation is being carried out by the RCMP and the Fire Marshal’s Office.
The Island Barrington Passage Fire Department was assisted in battling the blaze by the Woods Harbour Shag Harbour volunteer Fire Department and the Barrington Port LaTour Fire Department.
Firefighters had to contend with high winds and bitter cold temperatures while battling the blaze.
