Happy October Amherst! Did you know that Recreational Skating is offered free of charge as part of Amherst’s Physical Activity Strategy to become the most active, healthy community in Nova Scotia?

Some upcoming skates to take advantage of are happening on Saturday, Oct 13 from 4 to 5:15 p.m., on Sunday, Oct 14 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Oct. 28 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Please remember CSA approved helmets are mandatory for public skating.

Our stadium walking track is also open Monday to Fridays from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. And don’t forget about all of our trails available to you to help stay active in this beautiful fall weather. On Sept. 24, Amherst town council confirmed the appointments of 10 youth to our Amherst Youth Town Council.

They will now fill the important role as the official voice for youth. Our 2018-2020 members are: Rohin Minocha-McKenney, Allie Degenstein, Olivia Pulsifer, Rajan McKenney, Mason Carter, Grace Doncaster, Braeden Lines, Salem Dimichelle, Adrianna O’Quinn and Dan Osborne.

The Amherst Youth Town Council acts as an advisory body to town council on those matters within the influence of Amherst which have an impact on the youth of the town, regardless of their cultural and religious identity, socio-economic background, intellectual and physical abilities, sexuality or gender. Congratulations to you all!

It is the 14th Annual Nova Scotia Fibre Arts Festival running Oct. 9 to 13. The goal of this festival is to showcase creativity and quality artistry, and to encourage participation for learning and sharing in the realm of fibre arts.

The 2018 workshops and Events are now online. There will be so many fabulous opportunities to enjoy and participate in demonstrations, displays, quilt and rug shows, rug hooking, felting and so much more! Visit www.fibreartsfestical.com for more information.

With October comes Halloween, and The Great Amherst Haunting is sure to be a big hit this year. You do not want to miss out on the 3rd Annual Halloween Haunting at the Amherst Centre Mall.

This year will be even scarier than last, there will be even more chills and thrills, ghost stories and wagon rides.

The countdown is on until Christmas, and the Recreation Department is counting down until our annual Christmas Light up and Christmas Parade happening the weekend of November 16th 2018. Our theme this year is Songs of Christmas, so be sure to come out and join us for the special weekend.
