TRURO, N.S. — A 22-year-old Truro man was arrested for weapons-related offences after being apprehended by heavily armed police officers in Truro Thursday afternoon.
Truro Police Chief Dave MacNeil said officers arrived at a Lavinia Drive property around 10 a.m. and called in the RCMP Emergency Response team, which arrived around 2 p.m.
“We got a call earlier in the morning from a nearby business where the individual had been causing an issue,” he said. “We learned that he got to the Lavinia Drive residence.”
A Kaulback Street resident, who wished that his name be withheld, said he was driving home in the morning when a man he later determined to be the suspect, ran up and jumped into his vehicle.
“It was a shock and I wondered if he was going to try to carjack me,” he said. “This guy looked like he had blood on his hands and he’s telling me I have to drive up the road. I had some muscle relaxers with me and he grabbed them and asked if they were his pills. He was acting very strange.”
He didn’t see a weapon, and after driving a short distance, he stopped and ordered the man out of his car.
He added he subsequently spoke with police about the incident.
Armed police surrounded an apartment building and access points to the road were blocked by police vehicles as officers turned back motorists driving along Kaulback Street.
Some people were temporarily moved out of their homes, others were told not to go outside and to keep away from windows.
A resident who remained at home said she could see police, with weapons drawn, around an apartment building.
The suspect wasn’t armed when police took him into custody, but police applied for a warrant to search the residence.
“We believe there is a firearm there and any time a firearm is connected to an incident we take it very seriously,” said MacNeil Thursday afternoon.
The suspect is scheduled is to appear in Truro court Friday.
