I am a rescue dog, and my name is Sheena. This past January, I landed in foster care under the loving wing of Animal Rescue Coalitions (ARC).
My first foster mother was a lovely woman named Rachel. She took me into her home and kept me safe all winter, nursing me through my delicate surgery. I will be indebted to her for the rest of my life.
At the end of March, the decision was made to move me to a new foster home with the Jessimans. I am very friendly with other dogs, and the Jessimans owned a sweet rescue dog. Add the fact that most days, someone would be home to care for me, as I still needed more surgeries and continuing medical care.
Life with the Jessimans has been calm, peaceful and secure. I have a routine, nutritious food, regular exercise, and for the first time in my life, I feel as though I am looking forward to the future.
Recently, I made a decision - and I truly believe this is a first for any foster dog: I am adopting the Jessimans.
Usually, a human fills out an adoption application with a rescue organization. The group then check both personal and veterinarian references. A home visit is arranged, and a meeting is set up for the humans and the prospective pet. If all goes well, the dog is adopted to a loving forever family.
I have been living with the Jessimans for over three months, and I can tell you, this is the perfect home for me. I know they will keep me safe for the rest of my life as they made significant changes in their life for me and I will be forever grateful. They even bought me a child's size bed to share with their dog, but I prefer sleeping on a pillow under the nightstand in their master bedroom.
Please understand my previous life, before arriving in rescue, was no picnic. I was tied outside, bred, and at one time in my life, I had sight, but sadly, now I am blind.
The Jessimans have set up their home to accommodate my special needs. They installed security gates at the top and bottom of the staircases. They also placed carpeted treads on every stair, so I do not slip. They removed anything dangerous that I may bump my head on and they promised never to rearrange the furniture.
Finding a loving forever home for a special needs dog is difficult, but I can say with great certainty, I have selected the perfect home and family. The term foster-fail is regularly used when a foster family decides to adopt the dog they are fostering. I am confident I am the first foster-dog-fail.
Please give a homeless dog a second chance for a happy and fulfilled life. Fostering a dog saves lives and without foster families, homeless dogs would never get a chance at an enriched life. Please contact a local shelter or rescue if you want to help save lives like mine.
