Passengers evacuated after VIA Rail train hits debris in Belmont

BELMONT, N.S. — A VIA Rail train heading to Montreal hit debris that caused a fuel leak Wednesday afternoon.

The Onslow Belmont Fire Brigade was called to the scene, near the railway crossing on the Belmont Rd., at 4:38 p.m. and a HAZMAT team was requested for the fuel leak.

The train was carrying 77 passengers and 12 crew members who were assessed and found to have no injuries.

Passengers and their luggage were taken by bus to Truro. Passengers were able to get a refund on their ticket or take a train the next day.
