Nova Scotia has lifted restrictions that limited the amount of tamoxifen a patient could receive in one prescription.
The move comes after the Nova Scotia Health Authority received notification that the shortage had been resolved.
Tamoxifen is a hormonal therapy drug that blocks estrogen receptors, reducing the risk of the type of breast cancers that have those receptors will grow back. Also known as Nolvadex and Tamofen, it is the most commonly used anti-estrogen drug, according to information on the Canadian Cancer Society's website.
The shortage caused anxiety among Nova Scotia patients who had trouble getting their prescription filled.
During the shortage, the Nova Scotia Cancer Care program operated a toll-free tamoxifen Information line to provide information to patients and care providers about the shortage and to facilitate access to a limited supply of the drug. As of Jan. 15, people calling this number will hear a message indicating the drug shortage is resolved and they can visit their local pharmacy to have their prescription filled, the Nova Scotia Health Authority said in a news release Friday.
