Nov. 15, 1949: Quick Thinking

Mrs. Ida Light had finished her washing on Thursday, she disconnected her washer and went outside for a few minutes. Her 3-year-old daughter, Eileen, put the plug back in the socket and began to pull her mitten through the wringer when her hand was drawn in. Her four-year-old sister Linda, soon came to her assistance and before running for her mother, disconnected the machine and left Eileen hanging there by one arm. Quick thinking by Linda saved Eileen from serious injuries.

Nov. 22,1949 –Making Progress at Community Rink

Good progress is now being made at the Community Rink where it is expected the laying of the pipes on the floor will be completed by the end of the week. This work has been held up due to the shortage of valves for the header trench. These have since arrived and been installed. The welders were at work again today and will complete the remainder of their work in a few days.

Meanwhile the compressor and other machinery for the plant was shipped over a week ago and it expected it will arrive any day.

The engineer in charge is hopeful, that bearing any accidents, that the plant will be ready to operate by the first week of December according to schedule.

Nov. 29, 1949 – Dial System Ready by December 3rd

At 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3rd, the switch will be thrown to connect Springhill with the new dial system which will be installed by the Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company and which then will be ready to serve the people of this town. It will be a new era in telephone service for Springhill and one that will meet the full approval of our people.

A special ceremony is being planned for the occasion and it is expected that Mayor A.J. Mason will be asked to send the first call out over the new system. Invitations are going out to the Town Council, Board of Trade and Press to attend the ceremony.

Sept. 22, 1949 – Springhill Record – River Philip Highway Improved

Great improvements have been made on the sections of the River Philip Highway running from the pavement at the end of Valley Road into Collingwood Corner. Many sections of the old road have been virtually been eradicated. The highway has been materially straightened and many sections have been raised above the old road level with heavy fills. The wide gravel road has been sent over the old curves which once existed on this important road while a number of sharp cuts into the side hills to permit this straightening. A number of the old narrow bridges are still in position, but it is expected that in the coming months new bridges will be installed on the new highway, with old bridges remaining temporarily for diversion purposes.
