NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — For the second year in a row, a tree from New Glasgow has been chosen to light up the Grand Parade in Halifax.
The 64-foot tree was selected to be the city’s Christmas Tree last August after a Google street view search.
“We were super lucky,” said Mike Holinsky, project controller in transportation and public works in Halifax. “Our tree last year come from New Glasgow and within ten minutes we came across this one.”
What Holinsky found was a 73-year-old Colorado Blue Spruce growing on the lawn of Roy and Sue Jamieson’s property at Jamieson Custom Upholstery & Interiors.
“We’ve been here 42 years and when we got here it was as high as the roofs across the street,” said Sue Jamieson outside her home and business where workers were busily preparing to cut it down.
Prepping the tree
Since Nov. 13, the same day the Boston Tree cutting was taking place 15 kilometers away, workers were perched high above in the Jamieson’s lawn tying-up the branches.
It took five days and over 400 feet of rope, and on Monday the tree was ready.
“We often wanted to decorate it, but it never happened,” said Roy Jamieson. “It’s nice to think about all the people that’ll be looking at it and how many people will be happy just to see it.”
The Halifax Christmas tree lighting will be taking place on Nov. 23, with festivities starting at 6 p.m.
“I think we’ll go,” said Roy Jamieson after the tree had been lowered into the driveway. “I know my brothers who live in Halifax are both waiting to see it.”
