A ferry passenger who may have had too much to drink ended up in the briny drink on Wednesday after falling off a Halifax Transit ferry in the middle of Halifax harbour.

At 5:30 p.m., Halifax Regional Police got several 911 calls alerting them that a man who was aboard the Vincent Coleman ferry fell over a railing and into the harbour.

The ferry was travelling from Halifax to the Alderney Landing Ferry terminal in Dartmouth and was about halfway across, police said in a news release.

The ferry was immediately stopped and "the 31-year-old male was quickly rescued by the Ferry Engineer and other staff by using a life net," the release said.

The ferry continued on to the Alderney Landing ferry terminal, where the man received a medical assessment that determined he was OK after his involuntary dip.

"The circumstances surrounding how the male ended up in the water are still under investigation, however at this time it is believed that alcohol may have been a factor," police said.
