Stormy weather and poor road conditions have cancelled schools Friday in several areas of Nova Scotia.

The Annapolis Valley, Cape Breton-Victoria, South Shore, Strait and Tri-County regional centres for education have shuttered their schools for the day.

Also cancelled are Conseil scolaire acadien provincial in Argyle, Clare, Greenwood, Pomquet, Beau-Port, Truro, Chéticamp and Sydney.

The Nova Scotia Community College's Marconi, Strait Area and Wagmatcook Learning Centre campuses are closed for the day.

Cape Breton University has cancelled classes for the day.

The Cobequid Pass was closed Friday morning because of poor visibility caused by blowing snow. High winds also caused the closure of the Canso Causeway to high-sided vehicles.

The Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal warned on Twitter that other roads throughout the province were experiencing whiteouts.

The weather, which also includes very high winds, has also caused some delays and cancellations at Halifax Stanfield International Airport and cancelled at least the morning sailings for Marine Atlantic.

But the province got off lucky compared to Newfoundland and Labrador, as residents there hunker down as a major blizzard blankets the region.
