MONCTON, N.B. – A 31-year-old American man has been sentenced in connection with a crash that claimed the life of Nova Scotia RCMP officer, Const. Francis Deschênes.

On Sept. 12, 2017, Const. Deschênes was assisting two people with changing a flat tire on the Trans-Canada Highway near Memramcook when he was struck by another vehicle. He died at the scene.

Vasiliy Meshko of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania was charged with driving without due care and attention.

On Dec. 15, 2017, he pleaded guilty. On Dec. 22, 2017, he appeared in Moncton Provincial Court and was fined $3,000. He also received two years' probation and is banned from driving in New Brunswick for two years.
