SPRINGHILL, N.S. – Making sure no kid is left behind on Christmas Day is what the Toys for Tots campaign is all about.
The Springhill Lions Club has provided kids with toys on Christmas Day since 2011, and his year is no exception.
Lion Karen Morris has co-ordinated the Toys for Tots program in Springhill since 2013, and she says the program provides gifts for about 110 children each year, with the number expected to rise this year. Applications opened Nov. 18.
“After the first three days of applications, there are already 51 children registered to receive gifts. Families were eager and wanting to apply as early as September,” Morris said. “There are families who have never applied before finding themselves in need due to seasonal and shortages of work, layoffs and the cost of heating and oil. We are also seeing a larger number of babies and toddlers this year.”
Where to donate gifts
Anybody interested in donating a gift can drop them off at 6 McFarlane Street in Springhill, which is the building located behind Foodland, or at the All Saints Anglican Church.
People are asked to not leave donations outside the door but to donate them during operating hours which is Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We accept new unwrapped toys, gifts, clothing as well as monetary donations,” Morris said.
A group of four to five Lions give 120-plus hours of their time volunteering, processing applications, writing Christmas cards, shopping, assembling boxes, gifts and toys for the program.
“While it is a large project for the small club to undertake, it is one they are passionate about taking into account every family situation is different,” Morris said. “Every effort is made to grant the wishes and help each family put a smile on their children's face.”
