AMHERST, N.S. - From prenatal care and welcoming newborn babies to caring for children of all ages, the Maternity/Child Unit of the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre works with families to provide superior care to our youngest patients.

Currently, the Maternity/Child Unit urgently requires a transport incubator for infants needing specialized medical care outside of the CRHCC.

The incubator provides a safe environment to ensure that babies are stable while travelling the long distance to Moncton or Halifax. The transport incubator will be complemented with a Bili Blanket, which is a portable phototherapy device for treatment of neonatal jaundice.

Bili Blankets are necessary as left untreated, elevated bilirubin levels could have long-term effects like permanent brain damage. Combined, these two pieces of equipment are estimated to cost approximately $30,000.

To further enhance current services, we are also exploring the purchase of a new ultrasound machine (approximate cost $50,000 to $80,000).
To help reach the goal of close to $110,000 the Cumberland Health Care Foundaton is hosting a Tea for Tots on Oct. 11 in the Cafeteria of the regional hospital. The foundation will be working in partnership with the staff of the Weston Foods’ Amherst plant, which will match all donations made at this event.

Come for your morning coffee as early as 8 a.m.

For only $10 people can enjoy coffee or tea, home-baked goodies, and receive a beautiful boxed art mug – there are 50 different designs you can choose from! Keep it for yourself or save it for someone special at Christmas.

Or come at noon for a barbecue. $5 gets you a hamburger or hot dog, a drink and sweets. There will be another barbecue from 4 to 6 p.m.

While there purchase raffle tickets for two TVs and a stunning handmade quilt, spin the wheel for an array of prizes, or bid on some very special artwork created by the children of Spring Street Academy.

Under the theme of “Through a Baby’s Eyes” the children have drawn their memories of being a baby. The seven pieces of art that gain the highest bids will be put on display in the hospital for all to enjoy.

It will be a day of fun, entertainment, and food – all in support of the Maternity/Child Care Unit.

There will be free parking all day at the hospital.

Any monies raised above the goal will be used to support Maternity/Child Care in their work to achieve and maintain health, stability and comfort for families when they need it most.
