AMHERST – Amherst fire officials are investigating what could be the second suspicious fire in a week.

Members of the Amherst Fire Department were called to a South Albion Street address early Monday morning to put out a fire that destroyed a shed behind the Barrell Laundromat.

At this point the fire is still under investigation, but it is a suspicious fire, chief Greg Jones said later Monday.

Jones said a neighbour noticed the fire at approximately 3:35 a.m. and alerted the fire department.

Police were also in the area and also called the fire in. It didnt take long to put the fire out, but not before damage was caused to the back of the building housing Connors Family Restaurant and Freddies Pizzeria.

On Nov. 23, firefighters were called to a vacant home on East Pleasant Street to extinguish another fire.

Jones said that fire is also under investigation by the provincial fire marshals office.

Anyone with information about either fire is asked to contact the Amherst Police Department at 902-667-8600.
