SIRT asked to investigate death of man in Amherst Police custody

Unidentified man died Sunday from a health issue at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre

The Amherst police have received several complaints of individuals dumping their garbage on other people’s properties.
Amherst Police have called in the provinces Serious Incident Response Team to investigate the death of a man who had been taken into police custody early June 29 and died at the regional hospital on June 30. - File

AMHERST, N.S. — During the early morning hours of June 29th, 2019, Amherst Police located an adult male on Willow Street that they believed to be intoxicated. The male was transported to the Amherst Police Department and lodged in cells. While being monitored, it was noted that his condition was not improving and Emergency Health Services were contacted. The male was transported by EHS to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.

Tragically, on the afternoon of June 30th, the male passed away as a result of a medical issue.

On June 29th, The Amherst Police Department contacted the Serious Incident Response Team [SIRT]. An investigator has been assigned conduct an independent review of the incident.
