PARRSBORO, N.S. – Members of the 1st Parrsboro Scout group recently gathered at the Parrsboro Fire Hall to celebrate Scout-Guide Week.

The celebration included a potluck, Beaver Buggy races, and Kub Kar races.

The history of the scouting movement was also read at the event.

In 1907 Lord Robert Baden-Powell started the scouting movement at a camp on Brownsea Island in England.

His wife, Lady Olave Baden-Powell, became Chief Guide for Britain in 1918, and elected World Chief Guide in 1930.

Both were born on Feb. 22; Robert Baden-Powell in 1857, and Olave Baden-Powell in 1889.

He died in 1941, and she in 1977.

Today, the world Scout Bureau estimates there are 40 million scouts in 162 countries.

Scouts Canada is the country’s leading co-ed youth organization with more than 100,000 members nationwide.
