SPRINGHILL, N.S. – Jumping into a new school year is always fun for kids, including the kids at Junction Road Elementary School in Springhill.

“The kids love the first day of school, and I love it too,” said Marcella Chisholm, the crossing guard the kids meet each day in front of Junction Road Elementary. “You see the kids returning to school, and they’re happy and hugging their friends, and happy to get back.”

Chisholm started guarding the crosswalk on a casual basis in 2013, but has been on duty full-time duty for three years now.

She gets to know the kids quite well.

“There’s a little girl who comes here every morning at 8:20. Her name is Faith, and every morning she’s the first one here,” said Chisholm. “She stops and has a chat and tells me what she’s doing and what school trips they’re going on.”

They also discuss the tooth fairy.

“If she has a tooth out she tells me the tooth fairy brought her $5, and I tease her and say, ‘I think I’ll go to that tooth fairy. She sounds pretty good to me,’” said Chisholm. “The kids are so sweet, and they grow up so fast.”

She says the kids aren’t as thrilled about school as the year goes on.

“By the end of September the fun of a new year winds down and the kids aren’t as happy to go to school,” said Chisholm. “You have to convince them that it’s fun to go to school and to make new friends and learn something new every day, and that they get to go on school trips.”
