AMHERST, N.S. – Lacy O’Blenis never really thought anything of delivering Cumberland County’s first baby in 2019, she just wanted the birth to go well.

“Honestly, it’s not something I really thought about until after I was told,” said the 31-year-old Amehrst woman. “I was more focused on a good delivery with no problems.”

O’Blenis was given a due date of Jan. 1 when she first learned she was pregnant with her fourth child. Considering her other children were usually later than her due date, she was surprised when she began experiencing labour pains on New Year’s Eve.

The pain stopped and she was sent home from the hospital, thinking the baby was going to come a little later. That evening, however, the pain returned and her water broke. Returning to the hospital it wasn’t long before her baby arrived.

Zoey Marie Irene Cormier was born at 12:20 a.m. on Jan. 1, weighing six pounds, nine ounces. She was delivered by Dr. Murray McCrossin.

She missed being Nova Scotia’s first baby of 2019 by just six minutes. That honour belonged to a baby born at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at 12:14 a.m.

“It’s kind of neat with all the attention being given,” said O’Blenis, who got to go home on Jan. 2. “I guess she’s our little celebrity. It will be something to talk about in a few years.”

The father is Andrew Cormier. She has three other children including seven-year-old Shayla, 10-year-old Declan and 12-year-old Tristan.

Andrew has three other children from a previous relationship.
