SPRINGHILL, N.S. – The municipality of Cumberland County recently received $50,000 from the province of Nova Scotia to help rebuild the Mechanic Street playground in Springhill, which was destroyed by fire on June 22, 2018.
“Local playgrounds play such an important role in communities. This one was meaningful because so many people played a part in making sure the kids in the area had somewhere to play. It was a devastating loss on so many levels,” said Tory Rushton, MLA for Cumberland South, in a press release. “I’m very pleased that the province recognized the hard work and commitment of the community and contributed $50,000 for this important rebuild.”
Officials with the Municipality of Cumberland County’s Department of Community Development will hold meetings with stakeholders in the coming weeks to determine what the new playground will look like and when it will be built, with the hope that a new playground will be built this summer.
The $50,000 comes from the Recreation Facility Development Grant Program and will be added to insurance money the county received following the destruction of the playground.
The Recreation Facility Development Grant Program assists community groups, municipalities and other ‘not-for-profit’ organizations to develop facilities in order to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation. Rushton says he looks forward to seeing local children enjoying the new playground.
“I’m pleased to see that the municipal and provincial governments came together to work on this,” said Rushton.
