“I’m safe,” said Scott Armstrong, MP for Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley, after being reached on his cell phone. “That’s all I can comment on right now. I’m safe.”
Those were his words in a rushed voice hours after gunshots rang out on Parliament Hill.
A soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial was fatally shot. A gunman then entered Parliament, where several shots rang out close to where MPs were in a caucus meeting. The gunman was shot and killed in the Centre Block. Two others, including a guard inside Centre Block, had also been injured.
“I’m hiding on the floor in my office,” Armstrong’s assistant Sandra Bales posted to her Facebook account. “Shots were fired in this building. Security is on my floor with drawn guns and I’m scared. This is my worst day at work ever! Pray for the fallen.”
Bales’ husband, Cameron, tagged her in his post in telling his family and friends that she was safe.
“Sandra is fine,” his post read.
“She is on the sixth floor facing interior courtyard at Centre Block. Very safe place. I’ve been talking to her.”
