The $1,350 was part of a matching donation that the Scotiabank provided following a recent local food luncheon event held at the YMCA.
The bank also provided volunteer support the day-of the fundraiser event.
According to Su Morin, the Ecology Action Centre’s community food co-ordinator for Cumberland County, the Scotiabank contribution was a Godsend.
"It allowed us to close out our pilot year on a positive note, and with a little bit of money in the bank going into year two of our project," she said.
Morin added that the Local Food Box Project, a partnership between the YMCA of Cumberland, the Ecology Action Centre, and five local farms, is the first model of its kind in the county and in the province, and it aims to connect low-income communities with local farms in order to increase access to healthy local food for Cumberland County residents, such as seniors.
