AMHERST, N.S. – The Amherst Food Bank needs your help more than ever.
“We are desperate for food,” said the Amherst Food Assistance Network’s Charlotte Ross. “The shelves are nearly bare.”
She says the situation has never been this bad.
“This is uncommon,” said Ross. “It’s been a very difficult summer with very little items being brought in to help us, so we are buying the majority of our food.”
Ross believes high grocery prices play a role in lack of donations.
“People aren’t able to give like they did in the past,” said Ross. “Everything is very expensive.”

The Y Service Club & Amherst Y’s Mennettes Make a Difference Day, Door-to-Door Food Drive will be held Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Ross hopes for a big food drive.
“We know the town is very generous, and we’re hoping for a terrific food drive on that date,” said Ross. “If you’re not home, put the food out on the step.”
Items the food bank is especially in need of include: peanut butter and jam, apple and orange juice, instant coffee, canned meat of any sort, canned stew, canned pasta, sugar, Kraft Dinner, soda crackers, mayonnaise, potatoes, toilet paper, tooth paste, tooth brushes, and razors.
“Anything from the garden will also be accepted,” said Ross.
Also, people can make monetary donations to the food bank at the post office in Amherst at P.O. Box 45. A receipt will be given for income tax purposes.
There are also food boxes where food can be dropped off at Sobeys, Superstore and the Credit Union.
