AMHERST, N.S. – A plaque commemorating Cumberland County veterans killed in the Korean War will be attached to the Amherst cenotaph.
“It will bear the names of private Bruce Brown (Joggins), private Harold Carlen Harrison (Glenholme), private Emerson Edward Patterson (Apple River) and private Ralph Elvin Turnbull (Springhill),” Amherst mayor, David Kogon, said during the 2019 Remembrance Day ceremony in Amherst.
Plans are in motion to create the plaque but Kogon didn’t give a date for the unveiling.
“It is only right that their names be added to those already on the cenotaph, for like their peers from the first and Second World War, they paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live in peace and freedom,” he said.
Hundreds of people came out to the Remembrance Day ceremony in Amherst.
“We need to remember and honour the many residents from the town of Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, and the rest of Canada who paid the supreme sacrifice in wars and peacekeeping missions so we today may enjoy peace and freedom,” Kogon said.
He also thanked the men and women who served and continue to serve, in the Canadian Armed Forces.
“To our veterans, both those who paid the supreme sacrifice and those who returned home, we promise you that we will always remember the sacrifices you made and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the peace and freedom we enjoy,” Kogon said. “To those serving today in the Canadian Armed Force's we thank you for your service in maintaining peace and freedom. Your service will not be forgotten.”
