Much-loved TV host and musician pitches in to help a beagle who loves everyone – thanks to the Truro News

TRURO, N.S. —

A much-loved children’s music performer is lending his star power to help a four-legged friend find a new home.

Fred Penner urged dog lovers in Truro to step up and adopt an eight-year-old beagle named after him, saying adopted pets can be the most loving companions – and harshly condemning those who harm animals.

“It drives me crazy that people are so cruel and unfeeling and pick on the most vulnerable,” said Penner.

Penner learned about the beagle from a notice posted on the Truro News’ website and social media this morning, which he retweeted. Sympathetic Ear Animal Rescue Society is still looking to rehome Fred Penner the beagle.

Penner’s son and his family adopted a dog named Luna from a shelter who splayed her legs out in a submissive manner whenever someone tried petting her.

“[She] was clearly abused,” said Penner.

Through the CBC children’s show ‘Fred Penner’s Place’ from 1985 to 1997, followed by 22 years of producing and performing music and public speaking, the Manitoban celebrity is offering Canadians a message of compassion.

Penner said many of the children who watched his show in the 1980s and 1990s now have their own families, passing along the themes of love, care, community and respect for self and others. His fans are still affectionately known as ‘Fred Heads’.

In 2017 Penner released his latest album titled ‘Hear the Music’, which won him his fourth Juno Award for Children’s Album of the Year the following year. He previously won the award in 1989, 2003 and 2015.

“It’s really wonderful that this is the way life has unfolded for me,” said Penner. “Retirement is not in my vocabulary.”
