AMHERST, N.S. – One dog is dead and four others have been seized by Amherst’s animal control officer following an incident on Monday afternoon.

Amherst Police issued a news release Tuesday saying they were called to the Park Street area where four dogs were attacking a smaller dog.

An officer was approached aggressively by four dogs. The officer deployed his OC pepper spray at a large bull mastiff and a second bull mastiff-boxer breed. The dogs turned away from the officer but continued to be aggressive as other officers arrived on scene.

Police eventually corralled the dogs into a make-shift fenced yard, but officers had to remain on scene for several hours to make sure the dogs didn’t escape as they remained “extremely aggressive.”

A small dog was found by officers with severe wounds and died at the scene.

A decision will be made on the fate of the four dogs as the investigation unfolds. The owner of the dogs was contacted and it was discovered the dogs had escaped from the home.

Witnesses reported that the same dogs were also responsible for an attack on a person on Park Street on Nov. 11.

Police are following up on this information.

If anyone has any information on this incident, they are asked to contact the Amherst Police Department at 902-667-7227.
