AMHERST – Preparations are falling into place for the 36th Highland Fling in May at the Amherst Curling Club.

The festivities leading up to the popular fundraiser for the Cumberland Health Care Auxiliary begin on Saturday with Fling Day at Canadian Tire in which participants have a chance to win a Nordic Track treadmill, valued at approximately $1,500.

“This is the fourth year we’ve had Fling Day at Canadian Tire and it has proven to be an excellent way to kick off our fundraising for the Highland Fling,” committee member Vicki Daley said.

Fling Day also supports the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. people can go to Canadian Tire, where there will be a number of events taking place to raise money for the Fling that’s set for May 12 at the curling club.

There will be raffle tickets and Fling buttons for sale and those in attendance will be able to spin the wheel for a chance to win the treadmill that has been donated by Canadian Tire.

Spins cost $3 each or two for $5. The number that’s spun will represent the number of ballots entered in the draw, while if a one is spun the person will get an instant prize.

“If you spin an eight, you get eight ballots in the draw or if you spin a five you get five ballots,” Daley said.

Fling Day at Canadian Tire is the first of three major events leading up to the Fling. Breakfast at Brittney’s is hosting its annual breakfast from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in support of the Highland Fling on Saturday, May 5 with $2 from every meal over $8 going to support the fundraiser that is this year going to purchase two respirators for the intensive care unit at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.

Singing for the Fling is also returning this year on Wednesday, May 9 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church.

There will be door prizes, 50/50, a live auction and canteen available.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Bordertown Jam that’s held every Wednesday at the church as well as from the church office, First Baptist Church, CFTA and the Amherst Artisans Gallery in the Amherst Centre mall.

Fling buttons include admission to the Fling on May 12 as well as entry into several draws for prizes donated by area companies and individuals. Prizes include a five-piece patio set donated by Canadian Tire, two Amherst Ramblers seasons passes and an overnight getaway donated by the Amherst Shore Country Inn.

The raffle is for a painting by John Greer.
