SACKVILLE, N.B. – Mount Allison University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Campbell has once again been named to Atlantic Business Magazine’s Top 50 CEO list.
The awards were announced in Halifax this week.
“I am honoured and humbled to receive this award with so many noted leaders in Atlantic Canada,” said Campbell. “As president of Mount Allison University, I have the privilege of working with many wonderful people, our students — the leaders of tomorrow, — our award-winning teachers and researchers, staff, and engaged alumni. This award is reflective of our collective efforts that make Mount Allison the special community it is.”
Campbell has served as president and vice-chancellor of Mount Allison University since 2006.
The university board of regents recently announced a two-year extension of his contract, which will see Campbell in the president’s office through June 2018.
Under his leadership, the university has been named the top undergraduate university in the country for seven consecutive years by Maclean’s magazine (and 17 of the past 23 years at Number 1, a record unmatched by any other university).
“Throughout his eight years at Mount Allison, Robert Campbell has led the best undergraduate university in Canada on a path of excellence,” says James Dickson, chair of the university’s board of regents and partner with Stewart McKelvey. “His forward thinking and leadership has heightened Mount Allison’s reputation across Canada and internationally and made many improvements to the University, while maintaining a strong financial position without any external debt. I wish to congratulate him on this latest award.”
During Campbell’s presidency, Mount Allison also opened its Wallace McCain Student Centre in 2008, renovating a former men’s residence into a ‘one-stop’ for all student services outside the academic realm.
This fall the university will open its new $30-million state-of-the-art Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts, a new home for Fine Arts and drama programs and a cultural resource for the entire community. This building will be financed primarily from donations, and with no direct government assistance.
In addition to his duties in the president’s office, Campbell also teaches classes in Canadian politics and is a sought-after expert on global postal systems, leading a government-review of Canada Post in 2009.
He has served as chair of the Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU), on the executive board of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), and is a founding member of the U4 League, an alliance including Mount Allison, Acadia, St. FX, and Bishop’s Universities committed to providing the best undergraduate educational experience in Canada and internationally.
Several Allisonians, along with Campbell, were also honoured as 2014 Top CEOs including Dr. Brian McMillian (’74), President of Holland College, Barry Kyle (’77), CEO, Industrial Rubber Corporation, and Scott McCain (’78), Chairman and CEO, Saint John Sea Dogs, and President and COO, Agribusiness Group, Maple Leaf Foods Inc. Kyle and McMillian were also inducted into the Top 50 CEO Hall of Fame.
