Unconfirmed reports of school lockdowns in Amherst are circulation social media this morning after a suspect fatally shot three RCMP officers in Moncton last night and wounded two more. That suspect has yet to be arrested and schools in northern Moncton are closed this morning and people in a cordoned area near and surrounding the Moncton Coliseum are being told to stay home and lock their doors.
Here in Amherst, however, it is businesses as usual within the schools and a source with the Chignecto Central Regional School Board says due diligence is being observed. As per usual, school entrances are locked and visitors must continue to use a buzz-in system to enter before immediately reporting to the office.
One of the schools rumoured to be under lockdown is the Spring Street Academy in Amherst, but Principal Aaron Stubbert dispelled the rumour.
"We're taking precautions... we let the kids in early today and we'll probably be in at recess because of the weather, but we're not on lockdown," Stubbert said.
In light of the Moncton shootings some Cumberland County parents are keeping their children home from school today.
