AMHERST – Officials from Kraft Canada will be in Amherst on Wednesday to make a cheque presentation to Jordan Hunter and the Town of Amherst for their efforts with Kraft Hockeyville 2014.
Celebrations will take place at the Amherst Stadium from 5 to 7 p.m. and the entire community is welcome to attend.
There will also be a free barbecue at this celebration.
Amherst won $25,000 by making it to the final 16 of the national competition that was eventually won by Sylvan Lake, Alta.
Amherst intends to spend the money from the contest on a new clock over centre ice at the stadium. The Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers are putting in a bid to host the 2016 Fred Page Cup and a new clock would be one of the improvements that could be part of that bid.
Hunter, a Grade 11 student at ARHS, nominated Amherst based on its hockey tradition and the Ramblers hockey club that dates back to the late 1800s and included both senior teams that competed for the Allan Cup in the late 1950s and early 1960s and the junior Ramblers that won the former Callaghan Cup in 1989 and represented the Maritime Junior Hockey League at the then Centennial Cup in Vernon, B.C.
Amherst also hosted the Centennial Cup in 1993, losing in the semifinals in overtime to the Chateauguay Elites.
The nomination was also made to celebrate Amherst’s 125 birthday.
