AMHERST, N.S. – The Amherst Spartans U-18 girls opened their Basketball Nova Scotia season by capturing the 2019 Amherst Spartans Invitational Championship banner on their home court.

The girls did it with an 83-41 win over the Cape Breton Magic.

“I was extremely pleased with the way the girls player throughout the weekend,” said coach Thomas Skabar at the end of the tournament.

The team is made up of players from the high school basketball programs in Amherst, Oxford and Springhill.

“These were our first games together, so it was a great way for us to kick off our season and get more familiar with each other.”

Keira Dyck lead the Spartans with 18 points, Katy Baker scored 16, Lauren Furlong 15, Emma Mattinson 14, Brianna Warwick six, Lucy Scott five, Olivia Scott four, and Ceilidh Bennett and Kennedy Hyatt scored two points each.

“Our defensive intensity increased each game as the girls started to get more comfortable, and this allowed us to really maximize our speed and athleticism on the fast break,” said Skabar.
