AMHERST, N.S. – It’s time to get your tribes together for the 2019 Relay for life.

Based on the reality TV show, this year’s Relay for Life theme is ‘Survivor.’

“It is very fitting because the survivors are such a huge part of our relay event,” said Laura Ashley Farrow, Relay For Life event chairperson. “The teams can come up with their own banners and tribes, and we’ll have activities that fit the Survivor theme.”

For the fourth year in a row, the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is being held at Amherst Stadium.

“It’s June 8, and runs from 6 p.m. to Midnight,” said Farrow.

This year’s goal is to have 20 teams.

“Everybody has a different story and a different reason for doing what they do, so we’ve had small but mighty teams with two to five people, and we’ve had teams with 20 people,” said Farrow.

This year’s relay hopes to raise $50,000.

“It’s a really special event we encourage everybody to be part of, whether it’s being on a team, being on a committee, volunteering, or donating money.”

This is Farrow’s second year as Relay for Life event chairperson, and she’s been volunteering at the event for eight years.

“For me, the highlight is always the sea of yellow,” said Farrow. “When you see the survivors in their yellow shirts come into the stadium together, it’s such and impactful moment.”

Most people have been impacted by cancer in one way or another, and the relay offers the opportunity to celebrate survivors and to remember people who have succumbed to cancer.

“Amherst and Cumberland County has a huge number of survivors, so we look forward to them being able to connect with one another and for them to cry and laugh and celebrate one another,” said Farrow. “And, also, for the teams to share their stories as to why they relay, and to collectively come together as a community.”
