AMHERST, N.S. - An Amherst police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing in an incident involving a young woman on July 4.
Officers attended her residence to verify compliance with curfew conditions. She was not at the residence and unsuccessful attempts were made to reach her through her surety.
When she returned to the residence, officers met her there and told her that she had to accompany them to the police station. In her attempt to avoid arrest, she went to the rear of the apartment, removed a screen from the kitchen window, and jumped to the ground below, thus sustaining injuries.
As part of the investigation, the young woman was interviewed by SiRT investigators. She voluntarily provided an audio recorded statement in which she clearly articulated that the police had nothing to do with her decision to jump from her apartment window. She did so to avoid being incarcerated.
Therefore, based on the evidence gathered and statement of the Affected Party, there are no grounds for the laying of a criminal charge against the Subject Officer.
